Surf City Yacht Club

The Best Kept Secret on LBI

Welcome to Surf City Yacht Club

Welcome to Surf City Yacht Club. SCYC has become a place for adults and children to enjoy a variety of social events, sailing and boating activities in a vibrant and fun atmosphere.

Our expansive bay front location provides unfettered access to the bay for all types of water related sports. The clubhouse offers an inviting atmosphere for relaxing and socializing for each and every member.

SCYC creates a sense of community that develops lifelong relationships and fond memories and generations of children have grown and thrived by participating in our summer programs.

So whether you relax through sailing, social activities, boating, swimming, or just hanging out by the bay, you’ll find that SCYC is a special place and is one of the best kept secrets on Long Beach Island.

Register to become a US Sailing MVP

Many of the learning and sailing opportunities we enjoy at the club are made available to us by US Sailing, a nonprofit, member supported organization. They are a valuable resource and their programs are essential to our club. US Sailing is committed to building participation at the local level, and we can help them do so.

US Sailing and SCYC are partners through the US Sailing MVP Program. While SCYC has always utilized a breadth of US Sailing resources, our decision to join the MVP Program will introduce even more valuable programs and services to our members, as well as savings on program materials and US Sailing membership fees.

Every US Sailing member contributes to the programs that we enjoy at SCYC. We are all “US Sailing” and I encourage you to join me and every US Sailing member by becoming a member and investing in a thriving future for our sport.

Youth Sailing and Swimming

We offer an 8-week sailing and swimming program for children ages 4 – 18 who are either Junior members or children/grandchildren of members.

Young children can participate in our “Bay Kids” program to offer a safe and fun introduction to sailing and swimming.

Older children and young adults can join our Waterfront program and compete in weekly competitions with the other LBI yacht clubs!

Introduction to waterfront activities for children age 4 to 7. Classes will be held MWF from 9:00am to noon. An opportunity to bring our younger members into the Waterfront program and teach them about the island, the bay, and various aquatic sports with a “hands-on” activity oriented program.
This course offers an introduction to sailing for 7- 8 year olds in a very relaxed and secure atmosphere. The main focus is for sailors to become comfortable and confident while in a boat and on the water. Students are encouraged to use their own boats but the class can accommodate up to ten children without boats.
Introduction to basic sailing and seamanship. Students will learn a positive attitude toward sailing as well as responsibility for self, others, and equipment. Students are encouraged to begin in an Optimist dingy. Other boats may be available depending on a sailor’s size and age. Please speak to the head sailing instructor.
Designed for sailors who have acquired basic skills and are ready to start racing. Focuses on improved boathandling skills, sail control, sportsmanship and basic racing and rules. Responsibility for equipment care and maintenance are stressed.

Additional topics will include: weather patterns, maximizing boat speed, sail dynamics, sail trim, starting and finishing, comprehensive knowledge of rules, and sportsmanship. Team racing will be introduced. This class requires a full commitment to Wednesday interclubs and the Weekend Series with a minimum of 3 away full day regattas. Regatta attendance counts as a class session.
In addition to our extensive sailing programs, SCYC also has a fun and competitive swim program for all ages. We offer swimming lessons for all ages and abilities in both private and group lessons. We also have a competitive and fun swim team for all boys and girls up to age 17. We compete against other yacht clubs on the island with an emphasis on team spirit, sportsmanship and positive group dynamics.

The Laser Masters Atlantic Coast Championship (MACC) will be hosted by the Surf City YC the weekend of June 3-4. This year the MACC will be held in conjunction with the 46th Annual Jack Elfman’s Orange Pot Regatta (OCP) – the oldest Laser regatta in the country! The combined OCP/MACC fleet will sail five races on Saturday for the traditional OCP. The MACC participants will return Sunday for four races to complete their championship. The two events will be scored separately but the MACC participants are also part of the OCP. Attached are the NORs for both events. If you are interested in sailing in the OCP-only on Saturday, information and online registration is available on the SCYC website. If you are a Master who would like to participate in the MACC on both days as well as the OCP, registration for the combined event is accomplished through US Sailing's Regatta Network. Registration is now open and there is a May 20th deadline before the late fee kicks-in.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contacts us.

Les HuntonI miss the SCYC cinder block bunkhouse. Two bucks got you hammered at the Saturday night cocktail parties and then off to the Dutchman's to get served by Pinky, the classiest bartender ever.
