Our Mission

At Surf City Yacht Club we enjoy an active summer with a full calendar of sailing events, programs and social activities. We hope that you enjoy exploring all we have to offer, and that you may soon also enjoy a visit to our beautiful club.

The mission of the club is threefold:

1

Promote the character and well-being of all our members through friendly competition in activities connected with sailing and watersports.

2

Foster good will among our members through organized sailing events and related social activities.

3

Support the advancement of sailing and the general prosperity of Long Beach Island.

History of SCYC

Our history relates back more than 100 years when, in 1894, a group of young men got together and created an informal organization to promote aquatic sports. As the group grew, it became known as the Surf City Yacht Club and in 1940 the Club was formally created as a non-profit organization.

By 1954, with its membership roll at 82 members, the first clubhouse was constructed and the club has continued to grow since. Our members share the love of sailing, power boating, community and friendship with fellow members, their families and friends. Read More

Sailing and Boating

Sailing and Boating

Our club offers an excellent junior sailing and waterfront program designed with both the beginner and experienced young sailor in mind. It is one of the best in the nation. Experience sailing instructors conduct the program from late June until mid-August each year and junior members learn sailing techniques, safety and sportsmanship.

Young members can also learn to swim and join our swim team; we also offer a program for the very young—our BayKids program is for children from 3 to 6 years old and is offered 3 mornings per week. And if you’re interested in becoming a sailor, we offer adult sailing instruction as well. Read More

Social Events

While many of our members have boats (we have over 80 wet and dry slips in our marina), many do not and enjoy the Club for its golf, auxiliary and social activities. From May through late October the club hosts events on every Saturday evening (and many during the week) including barbecues, beach parties and dances.

There are many activities for different groups and this year’s socials include a Docktail party, Clam Bake, Craft beer and Wine Auction, a Martini Social, a Full Moon party, a Pirates party and our own October Chowderfest. We also offer a number of golf events during the season. Read More

We have a beautiful waterfront clubhouse. Standing on our deck overlooking Barnegat Bay and watching some of LBI’s famous sunsets is a benefit that is hard to take for granted.

Membership at SCYC

Our club is run by its members and supporting the Surf City Yacht Club is a vital part of SCYC membership. Membership and dockage is quite affordable because our club is governed and maintained by our members.

There are many opportunities to become involved. Members work together to guide the club sailing and social activities thereby promoting and strengthening the club and promoting lifelong friendships. In addition to these activities there are many committees that help the club to function and we always encourage the willing assistance of members. Our flag officers and our Board of Directors are all volunteer members.
